Just to show how much yarn one can get from thrift store wool sweaters, I'm posting a picture of the basket of yarn gleaned from 3 sweaters. The thing is, the pink one's from pieces were unsalvageable, the burnt orange's front has yet to be unraveled, and the green sweater was a child's size. These are destined to be turned into either felted bags, bowls, or my first pair of felted clogs.

You know, I gotta tell ya, I've heard about this 'unraveled thrift store sweater yarn treasures' thing but, I haven't learned how much time this takes. And, I can't even frog my own project disasters successfully so I can't imagine being able to do a good job at this. Lastly, did I get t his right, you just started knitting?? NAH. Surely you jest.

Deborah, I did just start knitting a week ago, but I've crocheted for years....that probably helped me get the hang of it nicely!

Unravelling sweaters is a nice cheap thrill! LOL!

I'm going to have to try this. Can you tell us what you paid for your treasures? I'm hoping it's mere pocket change - to encourage me to try it. I can't resist a creative project that's a recycling thing, and a bargain to boot! Do you check what type of seams the sweater has before purchasing? I read an article about that recently. I love winding yarn into balls by hand. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Hi Sonja, nice to "see" you again. Those sweaters cost me between $2-$3...is that nice enough to tempt you?! :o) Yes I now know to only get sweaters where all the seams are knitted and not sewn (overcast). It truly is so satisfying to unravel a sweater into a sweet ball of yarn!

Heidi,

I hope you don't mind, I had a little fun at my blog mentioning your skills with frogging. I love boucle yarn and it doesn't frog well so I suggest to everyone that it is impossible to do, except for you, of course!
